about
This was a Carey Ott co-write and one that I knew I wanted to record from the day we wrote it in March of 2018. Carey and I often begin co-writes with lengthy heart to hearts about what we’re working on in ourselves, what we’re reading, and what’s inspiring us. The conversation often veers this way and that and along the way one of us might say “maybe that’s what this song is about”. On this particular day, a thread in the conversation was authenticity. As artists, one’s own authenticity and unique perspective is our greatest asset and in some ways it feels like it’s all we really have. Our ability to look at something and respond as ourselves and reflect back in our own authentic way is crucial. I know that Carey and I have learned this lesson on our own journeys--and are always continuing to learn it more fully. The goal is to create art that is un-self-conscious, that is our own truth and not trying to be something we think might be trendy or popular or “cool”. “Don’t worry, don’t be sorry, say it” is the repeating mantra of this song and it is what I have endeavored to do throughout this record, and as I move forward through my life. Carey came up with the instrumental hook on our original demo, the riff that comes in right after the guitar solo. On the record that riff is played on charango, a South American lute-like instrument, by Kai Welch. To me, something like that--Kai playing that riff on charango--is an example of a musical idea that likely occurred as a result of everyone recording in the bubble of their own homes, with the time and space to be playful and try things off the well-worn path.
lyrics
Bask on the lawn
‘Cause you're the one
Laugh in the moon
‘Cause pretty soon
Dance young soul
Don't worry don't be sorry
Say it, say it
Doesn't matter I won't judge you
Say it, say it
Fill up the tank
Kick the tires
Ride in the car
It got you this far
Don't worry don't be sorry
Say it, say it
Doesn't matter I won't judge you
Say it, say it...
